LOCALS The APWU is a democratic organization comprised of dues-paying members who belong to approximately 1,600 state and local unions and retiree chapters in every state and territory. APWU officers are elected by union members.

HISTORY The APWU was founded on July 1, 1971, the result of a merger of five postal unions. The two largest unions involved in the merger were the United Federation of Postal Clerks, which represented those who "worked the windows" at post offices and those who sorted and processed mail behind the scenes, and the National Postal Union, which claimed members in each craft.

COLLECTIVE BARGAINING The APWU 2006- 2010 National Agreement was approved by 88% of APWU union members.

AFFILIATIONS The APWU is affiliated with the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), a federation of 72 national unions with a combined membership of 13 million workers. The APWU also is affiliated with Communications International (formerly PTTI), an organization of labor unions representing workers in the field of communications in nations throughout the world.

OPERATIONS The APWU is headquartered at 1300 L St. NW, Washington, DC 20005

CONVENTIONS APWU's highest governing body is its biennial national convention. Between conventions, a 12-person National Executive Board sets union policy.
