CLERKS

Membership

The APWU is the world's largest postal union, representing more than 220,000 USPS employees and retirees, and nearly 2,000 private-sector mail workers.

Organization

The APWU is a democratic organization comprised of dues-paying members who belong to more than 1,000 state and local unions and retiree chapters in every state and territory. The APWU's state and local affiliates are autonomous organizations that rely on the national union to represent their interests in contract negotiations and in national-level grievances. The union negotiates a national Collective Bargaining Agreement for it's members' and fights for their interests on Capitol Hill. The APWU also has many Retiree and Auxiliary chapters so that former postal workers and postal families can remain active in union affairs.

Officers

Members of the APWU Executive Board include the President, Executive Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer and Director of Industrial Relations; the directors of the Clerk, Maintenance and Motor Vehicle Divisions, Support Services and five Regional Coordinators. The APWU officers are elected directly by the members of the APWU.

Collective Bargaining

APWU members approved a new contract May 11, 2011 with more than 75 percent of those casting ballots voting in favor of ratification. The final tally was 69,451 to 22,351 in balloting that ended May 10. The agreement will expire May 20, 2015.

Affiliations

The APWU is affiliated with the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), a federation of 54 national and international labor unions with a combined membership of 10 million workers. The APWU also is affiliated with United Network International (UNI), an organization of labor unions representing workers in the field of communications in nations throughout the world.

History

The APWU was founded on July 1, 1971, the result of a merger of five postal unions. The two largest unions involved in the merger were the United Federation of Postal Clerks, which represented those who "worked the windows" at post offices and those who sorted and processed mail behind the scenes, and the National Postal Union, which claimed members in each craft.

Operations

The APWU is headquartered at 1300 L St. NW, Washington, DC 20005. Officers and staff can be reached at 202-842-4200.

Conventions

APWU's highest governing body is its biennial national convention. Between conventions, a 13-person National Executive Board sets union policy.
